Day 53 (D-10) A cinema break

Before leaving The Grand Tetons, let me make two film suggestions.

--First, do you know the 1953 film Shane?  A classic Western with Alan Ladd.  Take a look at the trailer here and if you can find the film and if you like Westerns, you might like watching it.

--The second film is another classic that takes you to an episode in the history of Wyoming.  The Johnson County War.
Did you know that sometimes you can find Simple English Wikipedia?
Look here:  https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson_County_War

The Johnson County War, also known as the War on Powder River and the Wyoming Range War, was a conflict over farmland that took place in Johnson County, Wyoming between 1889 and 1893.

The film:  Heaven's Gate.  La Porte du Paradis.  Director Michael Cimino.  Extraordinary. Long. 3 hours and 38 minutes!  (1980)  And you'll see Isabelle Huppert in one of her first films.  She's talented and beautiful!
The making of the film was so expensive that United Artists went bankrupt.

Wyoming, 1890. James Averill is the Sherriff of Johnson County, a county largely inhabited by foreign immigrants. The wealthy cattle owners view the immigrant farmers as a nuisance and hindrance to them enlarging their own land. The cattlemen's association, the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, effectively declares war on the immigrant farmers, and gets the state government's blessing. They assemble an army of guns-for-hire, and, backed by the U.S. Cavalry, set out to rid the state of the immigrants. James Averill's heart is with the immigrants, but he is not sure they have a chance of winning the inevitable war.
In Writer and Director Michael Cimino's bleak anti-western based on events in 1890s Wyoming, Sheriff James Averill attempts to protect immigrant farmers from wealthy cattle interests, and also clashes with a hired gun, Nathan Champion, over the woman they both love. Both men find themselves questioning their roles in the furious conflict between wealthy landowners and European immigrants attempting to build new lives on the American frontier, which culminates in a brutal pitched battle.
My best,
Jane
